How do you become a pediatric NP preceptor?
The short answer
Pediatric nurse practitioner students are precepted by PNPs certified through PNCB (CPNP-PC for primary care, CPNP-AC for acute care), by FNPs with a pediatric panel, and by pediatricians. You need an active, unencumbered license and a pediatric patient population. PNCB recertifies every year, and precepting graduate PNP or FNP students is one of the professional activities it accepts toward the yearly hours.
- 750direct patient care hours each PNP student completes
- 2PNCB certifications: CPNP-PC and CPNP-AC
- 1 yearPNCB’s recertification cycle
- 7 yearsPNCB’s cycle for Pediatric Updates modules
What PNP students practice with you
PNP students care for children from newborns to young adults, in primary care or acute care:
- Well-child visits, growth and development.
- Immunizations and anticipatory guidance for families.
- Common acute illnesses and injuries.
- Chronic pediatric conditions such as asthma.
- For acute care students, hospitalized and critically ill children.
Who precepts PNP students
Primary care PNP students learn in pediatric practices, school-based health centers and pediatric urgent care, with PNPs, FNPs who see children, and pediatricians. Acute care PNP students learn in children’s hospitals, with acute care PNPs and pediatric hospitalists and intensivists.
How PNP precepting counts toward your renewal
PNCB recertification for CPNP-PC and CPNP-AC runs every year, with a seven-year cycle for its Pediatric Updates modules and pharmacology requirements. Precepting graduate PNP or FNP students is one of the professional practice activities PNCB accepts toward the yearly contact hours; its current recertification guide sets how much it counts. FNPs who precept PNP students count it under their own board’s rules.
