The short answer
Precepting counts toward renewal with every major certifying board for nurse practitioners, nurse-midwives and PAs. ANCC accepts a minimum of 120 preceptor hours as a full renewal category; AANPCB converts up to 120 precepting hours into 25 continuing education hours; AMCB counts 90 or more hours as up to 10 contact hours; AACN Certification Corporation awards renewal points from 80 hours a year; and PA preceptors earn AAPA Category 1 CME. Each board asks for proof from the student’s program.

ANCC: precepting is a whole renewal category
ANCC renews certification every five years. Renewal has two parts: 75 continuing education contact hours in your specialty, including 25 in pharmacology for nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists, plus at least one of eight professional development categories completed in full. Category 5 is preceptor hours: at least 120 hours providing direct clinical supervision or teaching to students in an academic program related to your certification specialty.
The current handbook, effective September 10, 2025, adds the details. Nurse practitioners may precept APRN, medical, physician assistant or pharmacy students in a program related to their certification population. The category counts teaching students in an academic program, so staff orientation is counted elsewhere. Preceptor hours stand on their own, separate from the 1,000-hour practice category, and the category is for students from programs where you are not faculty.
AANPCB: precepting becomes continuing education
AANPCB renewal by practice and continuing education asks for at least 1,000 hours of practice as an NP in your population focus plus 100 contact hours of advanced continuing education, 25 of them in advanced pharmacology, within the five-year certification period. That applies to FNP-C, A-GNP-C and the newer PMHNP-C, for which AANPCB began taking applications in January 2024.
Hours spent precepting advanced health care students, while providing direct patient care as an NP in your certification area, convert to continuing education: up to 120 hours, for as many as 25 non-pharmacology credits. Smaller totals convert to fewer credits on AANPCB’s conversion table, and pharmacology hours are earned through pharmacology education.
AACN Certification Corporation: ACNPC-AG
Adult-gerontology acute care NPs certified through AACN Certification Corporation renew every five years. Precepting earns continuing education renewal points once you reach at least 80 hours of preceptorship in a year. The points are for precepting graduate APRN students from a program where you are not faculty, beyond the regular duties of your job.
PNCB: pediatric nurse practitioners
PNCB recertification for CPNP-PC and CPNP-AC runs every year, with a seven-year cycle for its Pediatric Updates modules and pharmacology requirements. Precepting graduate PNP or FNP students is one of the professional practice activities PNCB accepts toward the yearly contact hours. PNCB’s current recertification guide sets the hours and how much it counts.
AMCB: certified nurse-midwives
AMCB certification runs on a five-year cycle. Through its Certificate Maintenance Program, a CNM completes three maintenance modules, one in each area of practice, and 20 contact hours of approved continuing education.
Direct clinical supervision of a nurse-midwifery or midwifery student from an ACME-accredited program, with or without payment, counts for up to 10 contact hours for 90 or more hours spent precepting. AMCB asks for a letter from the faculty coordinator as documentation.
NCC: women’s health and neonatal NPs
NCC certifications such as WHNP-BC and NNP-BC are maintained every three years through continuing education. The number of hours, and the topics, come from an education plan built on NCC’s Continuing Competency Assessment, which you take at the start of each cycle. NCC’s maintenance guide lists the activities it accepts toward that plan.
Physician assistants: AAPA and NCCPA
AAPA awards Category 1 CME for clinical teaching through PA programs accredited by ARC-PA: 2 credits per student for each 40-hour week. The program applies to AAPA each year and credits its eligible preceptors, who are practicing PAs. NCCPA certification maintenance runs on a ten-year process of five two-year cycles; in each cycle you log at least 100 CME credits, including at least 50 Category 1 credits.
The board rules side by side
| Board | Cycle | How precepting counts |
|---|---|---|
| ANCC | 5 years | At least 120 preceptor hours completes Category 5 |
| AANPCB | 5 years | Up to 120 hours convert to up to 25 non-pharmacology CE hours |
| AACN (ACNPC-AG) | 5 years | At least 80 hours a year earns renewal points |
| PNCB | Every year | Precepting graduate PNP or FNP students counts toward the yearly hours |
| AMCB | 5 years | 90 or more hours count for up to 10 contact hours |
| AAPA / NCCPA | 2-year CME cycles | 2 Category 1 credits per student per 40-hour week |
The proof boards ask for
Boards ask for confirmation from the program rather than your student’s clinical log. A letter or form from the program usually states:
- Your name and credential.
- The student’s name and program.
- The dates of the rotation.
- The total hours you precepted.
- A signature from someone at the school who can confirm it, such as the clinical coordinator or faculty coordinator.
Keeping it simple
Ask for the letter at the end of every rotation, while the dates are fresh, and file it with your renewal papers. Put the figures in your request so the school only has to confirm them. With Preceptorate, every hour is on record in your portal, which makes the request quick, and your recruitment manager can help you gather the letter.
