How do you become an FNP preceptor?
The short answer
An FNP preceptor is usually a certified family nurse practitioner, FNP-C through AANPCB or FNP-BC through ANCC, with an active, unencumbered license and a year or more in practice; family physicians, internists and pediatricians often precept part of an FNP student’s hours too. FNP students complete at least 750 direct patient care hours across the lifespan, and precepting counts toward your own renewal with both boards.
- 750direct patient care hours each FNP student completes, at minimum
- 2boards certify FNPs: AANPCB (FNP-C) and ANCC (FNP-BC)
- 120precepting hours: an ANCC renewal category, or up to 25 AANPCB CE hours
- 5primary care settings where FNP students learn
What FNP students practice with you
FNP students care for individuals and families across the lifespan, so their hours span children, adults, older adults and often women’s health. With you they practice the everyday work of primary care:
- Acute visits for common problems.
- Chronic disease management, such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma.
- Preventive care, screenings and well visits.
- Patient education and shared decision-making.
- Telehealth follow-ups, where the student’s school accepts them.
Who precepts FNP students
Most FNP programs place students with a certified FNP for most of their hours. The 2022 NP education standards also name physicians, physician assistants and clinical nurse specialists among the clinicians programs may use, so a family physician, internist or pediatrician often precepts part of an FNP student’s hours, which broadens the patients they see.
How FNP precepting counts toward your renewal
AANPCB renews certification every five years: at least 1,000 practice hours as an NP in your population focus and 100 contact hours of advanced continuing education, 25 in pharmacology. Up to 120 precepting hours convert to as many as 25 non-pharmacology CE hours. ANCC also renews every five years: 75 contact hours, 25 in pharmacology for NPs, plus at least one of eight professional development categories, and a minimum of 120 preceptor hours completes the preceptor category.
Ask the student’s program for a letter confirming your dates and hours at the end of each rotation; with Preceptorate, every hour is also on record in your portal.
