How do you become an AGACNP preceptor?
The short answer
AGACNP students are precepted in person by adult-gerontology acute care NPs, certified as AGACNP-BC through ANCC or ACNPC-AG through AACN Certification Corporation, and by hospitalists, intensivists and inpatient specialists for part of their hours. You need an active, unencumbered license and privileges where you practice. Precepting counts toward renewal with both boards: ANCC’s 120-hour preceptor category, and AACN renewal points from 80 hours a year.
- 750direct patient care hours each AGACNP student completes
- 2boards certify AGACNPs: ANCC (AGACNP-BC) and AACN (ACNPC-AG)
- 80 a yearprecepting hours that earn ACNPC-AG renewal points
- 5 yearsthe renewal cycle with both boards
What AGACNP students practice with you
Acute care students learn the care of acutely and critically ill adults:
- Admissions, daily rounds and discharge planning.
- Assessment and management of acute and complex chronic illness.
- Interpreting labs, imaging and monitoring.
- Procedures, as the program and your privileges allow.
- Communication with families and the inpatient team.
Who precepts AGACNP students
Certified AGACNPs precept most hours, in hospital medicine, intensive care, emergency departments and inpatient specialty services such as cardiology and pulmonology. Hospitalists, intensivists and specialty physicians often precept part of a student’s hours. Acute care hours are in person, so Preceptorate matches acute care preceptors in person.
How AGACNP precepting counts toward your renewal
ANCC renews AGACNP-BC every five years, and a minimum of 120 preceptor hours completes its preceptor category. AACN Certification Corporation renews ACNPC-AG every five years, and at least 80 hours a year of precepting graduate APRN students from a program where you are not faculty earns continuing education renewal points.
