How do you become an AGPCNP preceptor?
The short answer
AGPCNP students are precepted by adult-gerontology primary care NPs (A-GNP-C through AANPCB or AGPCNP-BC through ANCC), by FNPs who care for adults, and by internists and geriatricians for part of their hours. You need an active, unencumbered license and a year or more in practice. Students complete at least 750 direct patient care hours with adults, including older adults, and your precepting counts toward your own renewal.
- 750direct patient care hours each AGPCNP student completes
- 2boards certify AGPCNPs: AANPCB (A-GNP-C) and ANCC (AGPCNP-BC)
- 120precepting hours that complete ANCC’s preceptor category
- 4settings where AGPCNP students learn most
What AGPCNP students practice with you
Adult-gerontology primary care students focus on adults through older age, with chronic disease management, prevention and the care of older adults at the center:
- Managing multiple chronic conditions and medications.
- Preventive care and screening for adults.
- Care of older adults, including function, cognition and falls.
- Care coordination with specialists and families.
- Telehealth chronic care and follow-up visits, where the school accepts them.
Who precepts AGPCNP students
Certified AGPCNPs and FNPs who see adults precept most of the hours. Internal medicine and geriatric physicians often precept part of them, and long-term and post-acute care settings give students experience with older adults that few other settings can.
How AGPCNP precepting counts toward your renewal
AANPCB renews certification every five years: at least 1,000 practice hours as an NP in your population focus and 100 contact hours of advanced continuing education, 25 in pharmacology. Up to 120 precepting hours convert to as many as 25 non-pharmacology CE hours. ANCC also renews every five years: 75 contact hours, 25 in pharmacology for NPs, plus at least one of eight professional development categories, and a minimum of 120 preceptor hours completes the preceptor category.
