How do you precept MSN education, leadership and informatics students?

The short answer

MSN students outside the NP tracks, in nurse educator, leadership and administration, and informatics programs, are precepted by nurses with an MSN or higher and experience in the student’s track, plus an active, unencumbered RN license. Their practicums are set by their program and often work virtually where the school accepts it. ANCC-certified nurses can count 120 precepting hours toward their own renewal.

What MSN students practice with you

Each track builds a different set of skills:

  • Nurse educator: teaching, curriculum design and evaluation, in schools of nursing and hospital education.
  • Leadership and administration: management, budgets, staffing and quality in nursing administration.
  • Informatics: clinical systems, data and workflow in clinical informatics teams.
  • All tracks: projects that improve real practice.

Who precepts MSN students

Nurses with an MSN or higher in the student’s track precept MSN students: educators in schools of nursing and hospital education departments, nurse leaders and administrators, and informatics nurses. Many practicums center on a project, and the preceptor guides it.

How precepting counts toward your renewal

If you hold an ANCC certification such as nursing informatics or nurse executive, a minimum of 120 hours precepting students in an academic program related to your certification completes ANCC’s preceptor category, one of the eight professional development categories for renewal.
